In every family there is always at least one shy kid that gets an extra dose of me. Take that!  I enjoy it and I think in the end they enjoy it too.  For this session Mama requested mostly black and white images….so an all black and white blog post it is.  What can I say …I am 25% people pleaser and 50% rebel….  I may have to come back and post more in color.  Living on the edge over here.  I had a fun time and from the looks of these images they did too.

Super cute twins above and below the guy on the left, the one with the gorgeous handsome eyes was pretty adamant about not being in photos alone…or smiling.  Ummm…I win.

This mama and I go way back to the soccer fields of our youth.  I think it’s been 15 years since I have seen her and she hasn’t aged a bit. She was always friendly to all, super smart, and fast as lightning on the soccer field.  Apparently the friendly smart gene gets passed to your children . Samantha was such a good little girlie for us and  it’s not to often that you run across a two year old that can hold full blown conversations and follow instructions. Little miss Samantha is smart as a tack and sure to run circles around her peers just like her mama did when we were kids. In the same instance she is still very much her age and all kinds of adorable. It was such a pleasure spending time with the family.

After spending some time with her I was left feeling like I wished we were closer back then and I should have hung out in the student body lounge once in a while.  Maybe I would have gotten where I am now a little faster…or at least taken the SAT. What? OK.  My high school senior way of thinking was if my super smart, mild mannered, 3.5GPA varsity soccer playing older sister went to community college I was probably headed the same direction.  So, I just took a lot of photography classes and ROP – Careers with Children to get off campus earlier. Ya know, preparing for my future!

Lately I have found myself in soul search mode trying to further find my photographic voice. The holiday season is such a mad dash it’s been nice to take a small break and recharge.  With that I often find myself pondering… what makes me different than all of the other characters that do what I do?  I don’t want to be a picture taker where everyone stares into the camera lens and basically documents what you look like.  I want to record the little things, to have fun and let the kids just be themselves.  So, in an effort to stretch my wings a bit and step out of my box  we decided to approach this session without a plan.    I had a few ideas in mind for locations but had decided from the beginning that I wanted to go for something a little different.  A little looser. A little more…imperfect. A little more…real.

I was nervous.  I love the feeling of nervous.  Not of the distress sort but rather eustress and I’ll take it any chance I get!   As soon as I started shooting it fell away and  I knew that this family was something extra special.  For starters it turns out that this whole thing was dad’s idea.  How dreamy is that?!  He is also in the Navy due to ship out for a year long tour effective March 2010.  Sigh.  While I am not one to ever advocate war (because it gives me nightmares)  and don’t believe it solves anything I support those who make the commitment to serve our country. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for your service.

Nothing in this world beats the genuine laughter of two people in love.

Quite possibly my new all time favorite.  The kiss. The grassy knee. That smile in mamas closed eyes.

My guess is that these two lay like this often. TV perhaps?  The word candy fell out of my mouth and they both flopped down in this position with no instruction.  Too funny.

This little family is so connected and genuinely wants to be next to one another and play.
